The Mempool

When you send Bitcoin, your transaction is broadcast to the network. First it waits in the mempool, a waiting room for unconfirmed transactions. About every ten minutes, a miner packs some of them into a new block. Block space is limited, so not every transaction fits right away.

How Fees Work

Fees depend on the size of your transaction in data, not on how much Bitcoin you send. The fee rate is measured in sats per virtual byte. Miners usually pick transactions paying the highest fee rate first. When many people transact at once, fees go up. When it is quiet, they go down.

Tips

Most wallets suggest a fee for a fast, normal or slow confirmation. If you are not in a hurry, you can choose a lower fee and wait. Some wallets let you raise the fee later if a transaction gets stuck. For small, frequent payments, the Lightning Network can be much cheaper.
