A spot bitcoin ETF is a fund on the stock exchange that holds real bitcoin. Inflow means investors bought fund shares and the fund bought BTC; outflow means the opposite. GBTC's large negative total is mostly the 2024 exit from Grayscale's older, more expensive trust.

Bitcoin ETFs in Asia: Thailand
What Thai investors can buy today, what changes on 16 October, and how crypto is taxed.
Rules for locally listed spot crypto ETFs take effect on 16 Oct 2026. No Thai bitcoin ETF is approved or trading yet: each issuer still needs SEC product approval, a SET listing and a licensed custodian.
New SET-listed crypto ETF rules
- Bitcoin and Ether only at first; passive funds tracking one asset with at least 80% average net exposure per year
- Coins held only by SEC-regulated digital-asset custodians
- Listed and traded only on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET); open to retail after a risk-acknowledgement step
- No margin loans from brokers to buy crypto ETFs
- Retail still cannot buy foreign crypto ETFs or depositary receipts on them through Thai brokers (institutions and UHNW only)
Bitcoin funds that exist now
| Fund | Manager | Registered | Structure | Net assets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ONE-BTCETFOF-UI | One Asset Management (ONEAM) | 7 Jun 2024 | Fund of funds: 2+ US spot BTC ETFs, max 79% in any one; FX unhedgedMgmt 0.535%/yr; total expenses ≈0.83% | ฿658m |
| MBTCETF-UI | MFC Asset Management | 11 Jun 2024 | Feeder into a single fund: iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) | ฿2.70bn |
| KT-BTCETFFOF-UI | Krungthai Asset Management (KTAM) | 12 Dec 2024 | Fund of funds: 2+ foreign BTC ETFs, max 79% in any one; discretionary FX hedge; min. ฿10,000 | ฿137m |
All three are 'UI' funds: not for retail, only institutional and ultra-high-net-worth investors. Risk level 8+. They are bought through the asset manager or its selling agents at NAV, not on the SET. Net assets per Finnomena, checked 11 Oct 2026.
Retail access since 2025
Since 16 Jan 2025 ordinary retail mutual funds may hold crypto via ETFs or foreign funds, capped at 5% of NAV; funds for UHNW investors may hold crypto ETFs without a limit.
Tax
Ministerial Regulation No. 399 (5 Sep 2025): no personal income tax on gains from selling crypto through SEC-licensed Thai exchanges, brokers or dealers, for income from 1 Jan 2025 to 31 Dec 2029. It does not cover foreign exchanges, mining or staking. ETF and fund units are securities, so check their tax treatment separately.
Crypto for tourists
TouristDigiPay: an 18-month SEC sandbox launched 18 Aug 2025. Foreign tourists convert crypto to baht through a licensed Thai operator into an e-money wallet; merchants receive baht, never crypto. Operator applications ran 25 Sep – 26 Dec 2025; we found no public list of live approved operators yet.
For comparison: Hong Kong
Hong Kong listed Asia's first spot bitcoin and ether ETFs on 30 Apr 2024, open to retail, with in-kind subscriptions. Spot BTC ETFs: ChinaAMC (3042), Bosera HashKey (3008), Harvest (3439). Combined assets are small next to the US: about $279m on 8 Oct 2026.
Listed in Asia without an ETF: Metaplanet (Tokyo 3350)
Japan has no spot bitcoin ETF yet, so many investors there hold Metaplanet shares instead: Asia's largest corporate bitcoin holder (also traded in the US as MTPLF). It is a company, not a fund: its price can trade above or below the value of its bitcoin (mNAV).
