What Is the Halving
Miners keep the Bitcoin network running and add a new block about every ten minutes. For each block, the miner receives a reward of brand new bitcoin. Every two hundred ten thousand blocks, that reward is cut in half. This is the halving. Two hundred ten thousand blocks take roughly four years.
The Reward Over Time
When Bitcoin launched in two thousand nine, the reward was fifty bitcoin per block. It then dropped to twenty five, and later to twelve and a half. After that it fell to six point two five bitcoin. Since the twenty twenty four halving, the reward is three point one two five bitcoin.
Toward 21 Million
Each halving slows down how fast new bitcoin is created. The total supply can never go above twenty one million bitcoin. The last tiny fraction is expected to be mined around the year twenty one forty. After that, miners will be paid by transaction fees. The halving is simply Bitcoin's built-in schedule.
