Bitcoin in 60 seconds

Five facts you can check yourself, then three quick questions.

  1. 1There will only ever be 21 million bitcoin.

The limit is written into the code every node runs. By block 974,345 about 20.11 million BTC (95.7%) have been issued; the rest comes out in ever-smaller amounts until about 2140.

Calculated from the issuance schedule at block 974,345 (blockchair).

    Why 21 million →

  2. 2Every 210,000 blocks, the reward for a new block halves.

That is roughly every four years. Since April 2024 a miner gets 3.125 BTC per block; after block 1,050,000 it will be 1.5625 BTC. 75,655 blocks to go, ≈ April 2028 at 10 minutes per block.

    Blocks: blockchair.

  3. 3You don't need to buy a whole bitcoin.

    1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshi (sats). At $76,888, $10 buys about 13,006 sats.

Price: Coinbase, 3 Nov, 04:47 London.

  4. 4Whoever holds the keys holds the coins.

A wallet's seed phrase (12 or 24 words) is the key to its bitcoin. Coins left on an exchange depend on that exchange: in 2014 Mt. Gox stopped withdrawals with about 850,000 BTC reported missing.

  5. 5No company runs Bitcoin.

Satoshi Nakamoto published the whitepaper on 31 October 2008, and the network started on 3 January 2009. Today 18,456 reachable nodes check every block against the rules themselves.

    Nodes: btcnodes.io, 1 Nov 2026.
