What DCA is
Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means buying a fixed dollar amount of Bitcoin on a schedule, for example $100 every month, whatever the price is that day. You get more bitcoin when the price is low and less when it is high, so you never have to pick one moment to buy. Bitcoiners also call it stacking sats. Wiki: DCA · Wiki: stack sats
How the calculation works
- Monthly: one buy on the 1st of each month at that day's price (the first available price on or after the 1st; for August 2010 it is the first quote, 18 August 2010).
- Weekly: one buy every 7 days, starting on the 1st of the start month.
- Prices: the daily USD close from blockchain.info market-price. The dataset starts on 2010-08-18: Bitcoin launched in January 2009 but had no market price until mid-2010. It ends on 2026-10-22.
- No fees, spreads or taxes. Coins are never sold. If you set an end month, buying stops there and the coins are held until today.
- “Worth today” is the coins bought times the current price (Coinbase spot, as of 2026-10-22 19:31 UTC).
DCA vs lump sum
The table under the calculator compares your schedule with one purchase of the same total on the first buy day, at the same real prices. For the default case ($100 a month since January 2015) the schedule put in $14,200 and is worth $669,787 today; one purchase of $14,200 on 2015-01-01 would be worth $3,602,222. Both numbers describe that one period. Change the dates and they change. They do not say which approach will work next time.

- Is weekly or monthly DCA better?
- The calculator shows the difference; it does not pick a winner. Other periods give other gaps, so test your own dates.
- Does the calculator include fees?
- No. It leaves out exchange fees, spreads, taxes and the network fee for withdrawing to your own wallet. Real results are a little lower. The fee calculator on this site estimates the network fee.
- Where do the prices come from?
- Each buy uses the daily USD close from blockchain.info market-price. The dataset runs from 2010-08-18 (Bitcoin had no market price before mid-2010) to 2026-10-22. The value today uses the current price: Coinbase spot, as of 2026-10-22 19:31 UTC.
