Lost wallet password or seed: what can be recovered
What is realistically recoverable when you forget a wallet password or lose a seed phrase, and how to avoid recovery scams.
Password vs seed phrase
A wallet password usually only encrypts a file on your device. If you still have the seed phrase, you can restore the wallet in any compatible app and set a new password. If you have neither, nobody can reset access: there is no bank behind Bitcoin.
When a forgotten password can be found
If you remember most of it (typical words, patterns, typos), open-source tools can try millions of variants offline on your own computer. A fully random long password is practically impossible to brute-force.
Recovery scams
People who lost coins are a favourite target. Anyone who asks for your seed phrase, wallet file or an upfront fee to 'recover' or 'trace' funds should be treated as a scammer until proven otherwise.
FAQ
- Can an exchange or developer reset my wallet?
- Not for a self-custody wallet. Only an exchange account (where they hold the keys) can be reset by the exchange.
- How do I avoid this next time?
- Write the seed phrase on paper or metal, store it safely offline, and test a restore with a small amount.
